About Us- The back story
Lugarno Baptist was established as a sunday school in a garage in the late 1920s when Lugarno was at the very fringe of southern Sydney. As Lugarno grew so too did
the church and its ministry to the local community. Even today we still have some original members from those early days.
In the 1990′s Lugarno and Riverwood Baptist Church became Georges River Community Baptist Church under a united vision to grow a large regional church amongst the suburbs along the Georges River.
Part of this vision included selling up and moving to a large new centre. In 2005 we made this step then spent the next 5 years meeting on Sundays at Lugarno Public School while we located, purchased, then renovated a large factory complex in Stanley St, Peakhurst.
In 2011, with the first stage of our renovations completed, we moved into our new premesis which we named Georges River Life Centre.
Georges River is a faith community that is continually growing both numerically and in its impact on the local community through the services and ministries it offers. If you visited us on a typical Sunday you would notice some of the elements that give this community a distinctive feel; like the broad age spectrum, the informal and friendly atmosphere, the freedom to be yourself, the passionate worship and teaching. You may also notice that there are so many children and families. We joke about not drinking the water here because in the past 5 years there has been something of a baby boom in the church with more than 50 children born to families in the church. Many other familes have also joined us in this time because our Riverkids program is absolutely brilliant and our kids just loving coming each week.
At the heart of this community lies a very special emphasis on translating Jesus’ message of life and hope into practical acts of service in the wider community and world. Several years ago we established Georges River Life Care, a not-for-profit organisation focusing on meeting some specific needs found in our local community. This organisation is almost entirely staffed by members of the church community, some are paid but most are voluntary. You can find more information about Georges River Life Care both at this website or at www.grlifecare.org.au.
